In order to get in the proper frame of mind
to understand the different approaches to graphics architecture
taken by the Massachusetts and Californian factions within Sun
Microsystems in the mid-to-late 1980's one should read Heroclitus
on the subject of the Peloponnesian Wars. Or, failing that, one
should at least rent and view The Godfather, parts I- III.

As in the case of so many ancient wars, the causes of the bloody carnage are obscure. But likewise, inasmuch as the names, hopes, dreams, and identities of the fallen soldiers are long since lost to history, we shouldn't feel guilty for having a good laugh at their wasted fury.
